What is craniosacral therapy (CST)?
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on healing modality which engages with the deepest inherent healing forces within the client’s body in order to enable integration of the whole body, mind and energy field. It focuses on what the client’s system (body) chooses to prioritise during each session. This light contact consists of gentle holds on various parts of the body. There is no manipulation such as in chiropractic work, or osteopathy. However Craniosacral therapy stems from osteopathic tradition, working with the cerebral spinal fluid, lymphatic, endocrine, muscular, fascia, tissue muscle and to name just a few.
CST engages with the cranial rhythms of physiology, which are working constantly towards health and vitality. As a craniosacral therapist I engage with these forces in order to enhance the body’s natural healing ability and to restore health and integration of mind, body, and spirit. It can enhance health in all stages of life from new born babies to pregnant women and the elderly. CST supports the body to prioritise its own health. It is a profoundly transformative process.
How can craniosacral therapy support you?
Craniosacral therapy is truly holistic, recognising that the mental, emotional and physical levels of the body all form an integrated whole.
The human body has a powerful innate inherent healing potential, which can be compromised or depleted by stress, injury, disease or trauma (physical or emotional).
At times, particularly when there has been some form of shock, stress or physical impact such as an accident which is accompanied by strong emotions, the tissues stay contracted and become held in the body, resulting in ill-health, physical pain or dysfunction. Any trauma, stresses, strains or tensions which remain in the body restrict the body’s functioning and can give rise to problems over the years. Craniosacral offers stillness and space within to be able to support, stimulate and enhance the body’s natural self-healing mechanisms.
As a therapist when we rest our hands very lightly on the body and engage on a subtle level, we can feel rhythmic motion being expressed throughout the body, as if the whole body were gently breathing – not just the usual breathing of the lungs, but a more gentle, subtle, rhythmic motion. Often people state that they feel as if they have had an internal massage after a session, with their whole body feeling lighter and more relaxed. This is when healing can take place.
By tuning in this way, the practitioner can identify areas of restriction, compression or tension through the body which may be impeding proper function. These restrictions may be the result of injury, infection, inflammation, emotional tension or underlying pathologies. They may also be the result of the compressive pressures during the birth process.
The craniosacral system works from the cranium and ends at the sacrum, incorporating the entire Central Nervous System which affects the whole body. It is the core of the human organism, and each organ, muscle and tissue in the body is linked to a precise area of the craniosacral system through its nerve pathway and associated fascial connections.
What happens during the first session?
Initially a medical history will be taken on your first appointment, this is followed by a treatment session. Craniosacral therapy is carried out with the client lying down, fully clothed in a peaceful environment.
